Microgreens Instructions and FAQ
How to set up your kit
Place one compressed peat pellet into the growing container.
Add 3 tablespoons of water and allow about 10 minutes for the pellet to fully expand.
Once expanded, gently break apart the peat and spread it evenly across the base of the container.
Sprinkle half the seed packet evenly across the surface.
Place the container in a dark spot for 2 to 3 days while the seeds begin to sprout.
Once the seeds have sprouted, move the container to a bright spot with indirect light.
Add small amounts of water as needed to keep the growing medium damp but not soaked.
Microgreens are usually ready to harvest in 7 to 10 days. Cut the greens just above the growing medium using scissors. Use the second peat pellet and remaining seeds to grow your next batch.
Feeding to Your Bird
Always wash and drain freshly cut microgreens before offering them to your bird. Cut only what you need and serve them fresh. Do not allow your bird to eat directly from the container. Do not allow birds to eat the peat growing medium. Do not offer rotten or mouldy microgreens to your bird.
How long do microgreens take to grow?
Most microgreens are ready to harvest in around 7 to 10 days, depending on temperature and light. Kale requires atleast a week.
Where should I place the container?
After the seeds sprout, place the container somewhere bright with indirect light, such as a windowsill or kitchen bench.
How much should I water the microgreens?
Keep the growing medium slightly moist. Add small amounts of water when it begins to dry out. Avoid soaking the container.
Why are my microgreens not growing?
Seeds can take a few days to start. Make sure the growing medium stays moist, and the container is kept somewhere warm during the early stages.
Why do my microgreens look fuzzy at the base?
Very fine root hairs can sometimes appear like fuzz. This is normal. If you notice a bad smell or grey mould, discard the batch and start again.
Can microgreens grow again after cutting?
Microgreens are usually harvested once. After harvesting, start a new batch using the second peat pellet and the remaining seeds.
How do I harvest microgreens for my bird?
Use scissors to cut the amount you need. Always wash and drain the microgreens before offering them to your bird.
Can my bird eat directly from the container?
No. Do not allow your bird to eat directly from the container or peat. Always cut the greens and offer them separately.
Can birds eat the peat pellet?
No. The peat growing medium should not be eaten by birds.
What if the microgreens look rotten or mouldy?
Do not offer rotten or mouldy microgreens to your bird. Discard the batch and start a fresh grow.
